The 2015 POWERFUL: Women Leading Design symposium will feature an inspirational and energetic series of presentations that showcase women who are leading the design profession in architecture, art, social impact and innovation.
Along with a selection of keynote speeches, we’re asking a diverse array of women professionals to share insight about their achievements in art and design, as well as, a greater understanding of the challenges they’ve overcome relative the notorious glass ceiling of the architecture and design profession.
Motivated by The American Institute of Architects’ effort to re-position itself as a more equitable organization (and inspired by AIA San Francisco’s annual conference The Missing 18 % Project), AIA|LA is coordinating a design symposium that will highlight best practices in women leadership in design. The symposium will also serve as a forum to hear from emerging professionals who are currently navigating the pathway towards a successful career.
Even though 50% of architecture graduates are woman, they only comprise 18% of the profession and only 12% of women architects are partners in their firms. How can the profession evolve to be more equitable and diverse? How can AIA|LA do a better job at demonstrating the added-value of diversity and ensure more equitable opportunities for women to prosper in the architecture and design profession?
During the POWERFUL symposium, we’d like to discuss:
- What is it like to be a woman working in architecture today?
- How can architecture firms attract, retain and promote more women?
- Why are women leaving the profession?
- Does it matter to the client?
Participants will experience an inspirational and energetic series of presentations, showcasing women who are leading the design profession in architecture, art, social impact and innovation. These will include personal histories from sole practitioners and principals from a diverse range of firm sizes, structures, and specialties.
Participants will become familiar with the statistics of women who study architecture, obtain a degree, become licensed and are employed in the architecture and design professions. How can the profession evolve to be more equitable and diverse? How can AIA|LA do a better job at demonstrating the added value of diversity and ensure more equitable opportunities for women to prosper in architecture and design?
Participants will be exposed to the latest best practices in women's leadership in design and practice, enabling them to better navigate a course to a successful career.
Participants will gain an understanding of the synergies between academia, architecture, design and construction firms, artistic and cultural institutions, and many other players, through presentations by a wide range of professional women.
In partnership with the Annenberg Space for Photography, join AIA|LA on February 27, 2015 at Skylight Studios in celebrating women in Architecture and become inspired by their stories.
