In Memory of Jeffrey B. Averill, FAIA, 1955-2017
One of our own, Jeff Averill, FAIA, LEED AP passed away this week. Jeff was the UCLA Campus Architect and served on the AIALA Board of Directors, as well as on the AIA|LA Fellows Nominating & Mentoring Committee.
Jeff was a gentleman Architect, quiet yet strong, kind, gracious and generous of his time. He was an esteemed member and leader of our profession. He had a deep appreciation and reverence for history as it related to the UCLA campus and took joy in the process of developing it. All universities should be so fortunate.
I had the privilege of working with Jeff as a client. His first critique made our work better; his second critique pushed us to re-think what can be possible, and he did not stop there. Each time we met, he left us with ideas to strengthen our project. He was an ideal client, always pushing for better design to enhance UCLA.
UCLA is setting up a fund for campus beautification in Jeff's honor. Contributions honoring Averill can be made online to the Campus Architecture Fund to support the continued beautification of the campus he loved, or checks payable to The UCLA Foundation can be mailed to:

We send his family love and our condolences. May his transition be graceful, his legacy celebrated, and his memory live on in all our hearts.
With gratitude and appreciation for the life he lived,
Douglas Teiger, AIA
