Measure H Funding Recommendations - County of Los Angeles Board of Supervisors

On Tuesday, June 13th, I attended the public hearing at LA County Hall of Administration where Phil Ansell, the Director of LA County’s Homeless Initiative, presented $3.3 Billion in Measure H Funding Recommendations to the Board of Supervisors.  This is a 3 year plan that will ramp up over time.

The funding recommendations were derived by consensus after convening of 50+ public and private stakeholders and community groups.

The recommendations target six key areas with twenty-one interconnected strategies:
  1. Prevent Homelessness
  2. Subsidize Housing
  3. Increase Income
  4. Provide case management and services
  5. Create A Coordinated System
  6. Increase Affordable/ Homeless Housing
KEY STRATEGIES to move forward include:
  • Outreach
  • Crisis/ bridge housing
  • Permanent housing
  • Prevention help for families & individuals
As we finalize the program for our upcoming “DESIGN FOR DIGNITY: Housing an Inclusive Community” conference, we will be integrating more details about the specific strategies of these approved funding recommendations into our agenda of speakers and participants.

D4D2 will be on Friday, July 14 (8am to 3pm) in West Adams at the historic McCarty Memorial Christian Church (4101 West Adams - Los Angeles, CA 90018).

BUILDING FORWARD #4 - Los Angeles Clean Tech Incubator

We led our fourth in a series of interactive forums on Thursday, June 15th at LACI.  The program featured Ben Stapleton, Jared Levy, CEO of Covered Homes and Peter Arnold among several other prominent leaders advancing innovations in resilient building codes.  They discussed "how their materials and technology impact resilience and sustainability as well as the opportunities and challenges they face with regard to policies, process and the marketplace. We also want to hear from you and your experiences specifically focused on technology and innovation in the building design and construction process."

Our 5th and final Building Forward LA session will occur in early July.  At the conclusion of this interactive process, the partners will create a set of policy recommendations to further advance sustainable and resilient solutions for our built environment.

Los Angeles County Business Federation Strategic Planning Session #1

As the co-chair of the Technology & Innovation Committee and as a Board Director of the Los Angeles County Business Federation (BizFed) I participated in the first of three strategic planning sessions, which will help guide the mission and the strategies of the organization forward over the course of the next five years.

The session was facilitated by Donald E. St. Clair, a partner with the strategy and communications firm McIntyre - St. Clair.

As the AIA|LA considers opportunities to further engage its stakeholders around a strategic plan, a few considerations come to mind:

As an organization (any organization) undergoes a process to further refine and amplify their mission, the emphasis is on "people" as an organization's core asset.  There is a tremendous value to advance a future-forward pro-active agenda it boosts morale and fosters an integrated approach to advancing a group’s guiding principals.  There is also strong need for discipline and unity - to stay on point and to focus with consistency on the challenges/ solutions.

Tap into technology as a key resource to better and more effectively communicate.

If the mission is to achieve something ‘specific’, then what does success look like?  What happens once that mountain is moved?  How do we ‘retire’ as an organization once we’ve achieved success?

We need measurable outcomes that be can be quantified and those outcomes are most apt if they specifically related to the direct influence of the organization.

These are all thoughts that came to my mind as I listened to other Board Directors and BizFed staff members around the table - and I think they are readily translatable to AIA|LA’s efforts, as well.

Strategic Planning Sessions #2 and #3 will be held in July and September.
