ACE Mentor Los Angeles is proud to announce the ACE Mentor Program of America as one of eight recipients of the prestigious 2010 Presidential Award for Excellence in Science, Mathematics and Engineering Mentoring (PAESMEM).

The ACE Mentor Program is a unique industry-driven and supported partnership among industry professionals---architects, mechanical, structural, electrical, environmental and civil engineers, construction managers, craftspeople in the skilled trades, college and university representatives, and others - who work together to attract young people to their professions.  Volunteer mentors across the nation immerse high school students in hands-on activities, which realistically simulate the process of designing and constructing a project.  In return, the industry gets a much-needed boost of new talent.

In a White House press release, President Barack Obama said, "Through their commitment to education and innovation, these individuals and organizations are playing a crucial role in the development of our 21st-century workforce. Our Nation owes them a debt of gratitude for helping ensure that America remains the global leader in science and engineering for years to come."

PAESMEM is the nation's highest award for mentoring. The award recognizes the critical role mentoring plays in the academic, personal, and career development of students studying science and engineering-particularly those who belong to groups that are underrepresented in these fields. By offering their expertise and encouragement, mentors help prepare the next generation of scientists and engineers while ensuring that tomorrow's innovators reflect and benefit from the diverse talent of the United States.

"ACE Mentor Los Angeles shares this accomplishment with ACE affiliates across the nation and the ACE mentors who selflessly transform the lives of high school students through mentorship," said Chuck Whitaker, Board Chairman and Vice President of John A Martin & Associates.

ACE Mentor Los Angeles was founded in 2002 by the principals of leading design and construction firms as an affiliate of the ACE Mentor Program of America.  Its mission is to expose, educate, and motivate high school students from Los Angeles and Orange Counties toward architecture, engineering, and construction and related construction trades.

Through the years, 254 mentors have provided guidance to 1,600 high school students at 24 high schools through a comprehensive after school curriculum, and awarded over $500,000 in college scholarships to help students continue their academic plans to pursue careers in architecture, construction and engineering.
