Light touches all aspects of our lives, and yet, it is taken for granted by most everyone.

In addition to enabling us to see, light is main stimulus that helps the circadian clock, and thus circadian rhythms, to synchronize with the 24-hour day. If lack of synchrony or circadian disruption occurs, we may experience decrements in physiological functions, neurobehavioral performance, and sleep.

Lighting for the circadian system employs lighting design objectives that differ from those typically used in traditional architectural lighting design, and therefore, requires metrics that differ from those currently used by lighting designers.

Join us for a discussion on the impact that light has on our health and how natural lighting systems are transforming built spaces into modern, healthy environments. Practical design solutions to increase the potential for circadian light exposure in buildings and new field data investigating the health effects of light will be discussed.

  • Mariana G. Figueiro, Ph.D., FIES, is Director of the Lighting Research Center and Professor of Architecture and Biological Sciences at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is well known for her research on the effect of light on human health, circadian photobiology, and lighting for older adults. She is the author of more than 100 scientific articles in her field of research. Dr. Figueiro brought attention to the significance of light and health as topic of public interest through her TEDMED talk (

  • Tom Hamilton is Vice President of Solutions and Services at Ketra, a dynamic LED lighting and controls manufacturer based in Austin, TX. Prior to joining Ketra he was Global Product Manager for LED-based interior accent lighting and general illumination products at Philips Color Kinetics. Prior to that he served as Senior Engineer at ColorLink, Inc. (acquired by RealD in 2007), a manufacturer of optical systems for 3D cinema and video projection applications. He has served multiple terms in Executive Committee roles with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and is a member of the Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA). Mr. Hamilton received his undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado at Boulder and received MBA and MS degrees from Boston University.
