This tour is sold out!

A rare example of modernism in the West Adams neighborhood, the Lukens House is one of about a dozen Raphael Soriano, FAIA homes that still exist. The residence is an important example of Soriano’ modernist design. It was designed in the international style for noted ceramist Glen Lukens, who was a longtime professor at USC. In 1940 Lukens purchased a half an acre garden from the Lyndsay Estate, one of West Adams grand mansions. By the late 1990’s the house had deteriorated so badly that it was boarded up. In an effort to keep the house standing, the Los Angeles Modern Committee and the West Adams Heritage Association successfully authored a landmark designation, HCM#868. Mike Chapman purchased the home and commissioned Barry Milofsky of M2A Architects to design the restoration. Since its completion, the project has received numerous awards from such organizations as, the Los Angeles Business Council, the Los Angeles Conservancy and the California State Preservation Foundation.
